Mr. Somesh Kumar Technical Director & DIO, NIC Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh presented a paper on ‘Migrating the libraries of Rural Educational Institutions to Cloud: An Indian Perspective’ during the  International Conference on ‘Academic Library Services through Cloud Computing – Moving libraries to the Web’ held at Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi . The conference was held from 12th Feb 2013 to 15th Feb 2013. Mission Director for e-Governance, Government of India, and Ex Director General, NIC, Dr. B. K. Gairola, was the Guest of Honour in the conference.

The 2nd edition of ICAL focussed particularly on how cloud computing could be applied for library applications, in particular for moving libraries to the Web. It discussed innovative uses of cloud computing in strengthening library services with the ultimate objective of repositioning academic libraries into next generation libraries.

Dr. B K Gairola, Mission shared his views about role of technology in disseminating knowledge. He spoke lengthily on ICTs and how same is being leveraged to harness growth and development. He mentioned how cloud computing has generated much interest recently and developments in this space have revolutionized the way computing infrastructure is used. Instead of installing packaged software applications on their computers, people and businesses will use their web browsers to access a wide range of “cloud services” available on-demand over the Internet.

In his paper Dr. Somesh Kumar mainly discussed about the use and feasibility of cloud based libraries in higher secondary schools and college level educational institutions in rural areas.
